Recycling (How would you accommodate this problem statement?)?

How would you accommodate this problem statement?

Home Depot wants to implement an automated CFL (compact fluorescent lamp) recycling system, which not requiring employee assistance in every transaction, this system must accommodate 200 medium base CFL’s and offer the customer a reward for their effort.

I think they could adapt the recycling can type of machine to take the bulbs and dispense a coupon good at Home Depot. With the coupons bringing in customers to the store it may be possible to put the machines in places other than in front of a Home Depot. I think between 10-25 cents would be the range for the coupon.

Why should you get a reward for doing what you should be doing? Besides if you do what the guy above me said you end up killing more trees with the paper. That’s like getting a cookie for brushing your teeth.

Require the customer to sign up at an electronic kiosk the first time they turn in bulbs. Assign an electronic bar code key thing (like they have at Petco, Blockbuster, etc) to the customer which can be used to collect points towards a coupon every time the customer turns a bulb in. The kiosk could also function to scan the bar code and count bulbs… thus requiring very minimal employee assistance.

Also, if the bar code was scanned at the register to give the discount, it would save any paper waste… Because I also agree that you shouldn’t waste paper on it, and really, how hard is it to bring your bulbs in because you know it’s the right thing to do.

I think you will have to either involve an employee or forget about the reward. If you look at how the office stores take back ink cartridges you will see that they have 2 programs. For certain desirable ink cartridges you get money back, but these are brands that the store will be paid for. Other brands are just put into a tube and no reward is given because the store receives nothing for them. If you want the store credit you must bring the cartridge to the counter.
